Chapter 33 : Token of Gratitude

Accidentally Choosing the Strongest Alpha in the Galaxy on a Blind Date

Inside the main starship, it was deathly silent.

Only the chaotic sounds from the communication devices separated this place into two worlds.

Everyone wore a serious expression, staring at the device in Lin Jing’s hand, unable to utter a word.

Finally, Yi Ya who had just come to his senses, asked in a bewildered voice, “Father, what’s going on? Aren’t we going to pay our respects? And what about those who are down?”

His voice was tinged with tears. He looked anxiously at the old Duke, his heart filled with panic and confusion.

Had he done something wrong?

Was it because he requested to visit his foster parents’ home that so many people died?

The old Duke heard the unspoken guilt in his words, pulled him close to sit beside him and gently patted his hand.

“Child, don’t be afraid. This has nothing to do with you, and you did nothing wrong. Someone wants this old man’s life, that’s all.”

He didn’t have much time left yet someone still wouldn’t let him go, devising such a vicious plan.

They wanted to exploit his newfound love for his child to fulfill all his requests, dragging so many young people down with him.

What a cruel heart.

“But those who are down…”

Yi Ya was terrified, sitting there pale and trembling, tears streaming down his face, afraid that his suggestion had caused so many deaths.

The old Duke felt even more heartbroken.

“Those are robots…”

Yiya’s eyes were unfocused, staring into the void.

When he finally realized it was a robot, he started gasping for air, clutching his chest with wide eyes, unable to speak but tears streaming down his face.

This scene made many present genuinely sympathize with the recently found duke’s son.

Ji Anli had been observing Iya.

After a conversation with the old duke, he didn’t notice anything suspicious in Yiya’s words or expressions.

In fact, Yiya’s fear of causing harm and his self-blame, combined with his good looks and red, tear-stained eyes and nose, gave off a fragile and delicate vibe that easily softened people’s hearts.

Could it be that he was wrong…

But until the last moment, anyone present except for the guards who sacrificed themselves in the past life, could be part of the real culprits.

So, until they safely reached the capital star, the crisis wasn’t over.

As Yiya’s emotions were gradually calmed by the old duke’s soothing presence, suddenly the old duke’s body stiffened.

He opened his mouth, gasping a few times and his face turned pale.

This sudden change was first noticed by Ji Anli who had been observing them. He immediately stood up.

Almost simultaneously, the old duke tilted his head and spat out a mouthful of blood, his complexion turning bluish-purple, unable to utter a single word.

The main starship was instantly thrown into chaos.

Healers rushed over in shock to start treatment but the old duke, with his head tilted back and mouth open, struggled to breathe with little improvement.

Yiya was completely terrified, snapping back to reality with a cry as he threw himself onto the old duke’s shoulder, anxiously and frantically holding onto him.

Ji Anli quickly reached the old duke’s side.

Seeing that the two healers couldn’t suppress the old duke’s sudden condition, he patted one of them, “Let me try.”

The healer, already in a panic, saw it was Ji Anli. Like grabbing the last straw, they quickly stepped aside, almost collapsing from weak legs.

Ji Anli didn’t waste any time, grabbing the old duke’s hand and immediately channeling healing power into him.

Initially, the old duke’s condition did improve but soon it took a sharp turn for the worse.

His eyes bulged, clutching his chest, his whole body involuntarily twitching slightly.

Lin Jing stepped forward to hold him down, frowning deeply.

Clearly, this wasn’t a mental issue but something else… more like a hidden ailment erupting, a sign of massive bodily failure before death.

Ji Anli pressed his lips together, his expression grave.

While treating the old duke, he immediately contacted the system in his mind, “Can you scan the old duke’s body? What’s going on with him?”

Just then, as he was treating the old duke, he was in contact with his body so the system should be able to do it.

He kept channeling healing power into the old duke. Even if it couldn’t suppress the condition, it shouldn’t get worse, unless the old duke’s issue wasn’t an old ailment at all

In the book, the part he drew said that the old Duke, upon seeing so many people die to save him, was so overwhelmed with emotion that he coughed up blood and died on the spot.

At the time, Ji Anli didn’t think much of it.

The old Duke was already in poor health and seeing everyone die to save him and Yiya, it was possible for him to suddenly drop dead.

But now, thinking it over, he realized he had overlooked some things.

This attack was clearly aimed at the old Duke. Someone wanted him dead.

Lin Jing and the others would have protected the old Duke with their lives.

With Lin Jing’s strength, how could these people ensure the old Duke would definitely die in this ambush?

Did they foresee that the old Duke would be so emotionally affected by the sacrifices that he would die on the spot?

But what if the old Duke didn’t care at all?

What if he didn’t get so emotional that it triggered an old ailment and killed him on the spot?

From the start, they never intended for the old Duke to survive.

The excuse of him dying from emotional distress after seeing so many people die was just for show.

No matter how the old Duke felt at the time, he would have died anyway.

They wanted to prevent the old Duke from returning to the capital star. This Duke’s son they found, with no background or power, would be easy to manipulate.

He would make a perfect puppet, allowing them to seize the Duke’s title.

As Ji Anli figured all this out, the system appeared and began scanning the old Duke as he requested.

It quickly provided the results, “Mild poisoning, curable.”

Hearing the word ‘poisoning’ Ji Anli suppressed all his emotions in an instant but his heart was in turmoil.

Poisoning, again.

First Lin Jing. Now the old Duke.

Was someone deliberately trying to eliminate both the old Duke and Lin Jing?

Ji Anli immediately asked, “Can the mild poisoning be cured? How much healing value is needed?”

He just hoped it wouldn’t be too much as he only had a little over fifteen hundred touch points.

If it wasn’t enough… could he get credit?

He regretted drawing a card back then instead of saving a few hundred touch points but hindsight is always 20/20.

Fortunately, those who wanted the old Duke dead probably knew his health was poor and didn’t use a strong poison, fearing it would kill him too quickly.

So they used a mild poison but it was enough to accelerate his decline if his emotions fluctuated too much.

The system quickly provided the result, “This poison is very mild, not lethal but it can trigger a chain reaction in the body, leading to sudden death.

One thousand healing points can be exchanged for a relief pill. Three pills are needed to completely remove the residual toxins.”

Ji Anli couldn’t worry about anything else for the moment.

He immediately exchanged for a pill.

As soon as he got it, Ji Anli withdrew his hand from the old Duke’s. He stood up as if to check on the old Duke, lifted his eyelids and then opened his mouth under the pretense of checking his tongue.

With one arm blocking Yiya’s view, he quickly tossed the pill into the old Duke’s throat

The pill melted as soon as it entered the mouth, turning into a colorless and tasteless liquid that slid down the throat and disappeared.

Ji Anli returned and continued to use his healing power on the old duke. But this time he just held his hand without actually channeling any healing power.

After all, the old duke was poisoned and using healing power wouldn’t help much.

No one present doubted Ji Anli’s actions, except for Lin Jing who knew Ji Anli too well.

Although he was puzzled by this sudden move, he didn’t stop him or ask any questions.

However, within less than a minute of Ji Anli returning to his original position and channeling healing power, the old duke who had been on the brink of death, gradually regained a normal complexion from a bluish-purple hue.

Though still pale, he looked noticeably more human.

With a sudden long inhale, the old duke closed his previously gaping mouth. His eyes moved and when he opened them again, they could move on their own.

Even his breathing gradually stabilized.

This scene stunned everyone who had prepared for the possibility that the old duke couldn’t be saved.

Was this the power of an SSS healer?

They were close enough to see that the old duke had only been exhaling without inhaling and yet he was brought back to life?

Ji Anli finally withdrew his hand and stood up to check on the old duke.

“The old duke is fine now. Move him to the side and let him lie flat. You two take good care of him and don’t let anyone approach for now.

The old duke’s body is very fragile and can’t withstand any stimulation, especially from Young Master Yi Ya.

You’re the one the old duke cares about the most.

If he gets emotional trying to leave a last message, we really won’t be able to save him.

So, for the old duke’s sake, can you refrain from seeing him for now?”

Yi Ya’s eyes were red.

“As long as it won’t upset Father, will he really be okay?”

Ji Anli nodded confidently.

“Of course.”

He wouldn’t dare let anyone near the old duke until he was sure everyone here was safe.

Otherwise, with only a little over five hundred healing points left, he couldn’t afford to exchange for another pill.

Having been reassured, Yi Ya clenched his fists and promised, “As long as it saves Father, I’ll do whatever you say.”

Seeing the area cleared, Ji Anli finally rubbed his forehead and leaned towards Lin Jing.

When Lin Jing immediately caught him, Ji Anli whispered so only the two of them could hear, “Find a place where no one is around. I have something to tell you.”

Lin Jing didn’t ask any questions or say a word.

He simply picked Ji Anli up by the waist.

“He’s used up too much healing power and needs to replenish with energy crystals. I’ll take him to rest. If anything happens to the old duke, call me.”

Everyone nodded repeatedly, grateful as they watched Lin Jing take Ji Anli away.

This was the man who could bring someone back from the brink of death. Naturally, his well-being was a priority.

Lin Jing carried Ji Anli in his arms and strode towards a private resting area

Ji Anli felt numb from being held.

There was no need to be carried directly. He was just acting.

Supporting him to walk over would have been enough.

But then he thought, forget it, he was already being held.

They were partners, a little carrying wouldn’t hurt.

As soon as the door to the compartment closed, before Lin Jing could express his concern, Ji Anli jumped down energetically.

He first checked around to make sure they weren’t being watched then turned to look at Lin Jing.

Lin Jing swallowed back the words ‘Are you feeling unwell?’ and asked, “Are you okay?”

Ji Anli waved his hand.

“I’m fine. I was just fooling them. I only used half of my healing power. The old duke was poisoned.”

Lin Jing looked surprised.

“Poisoned?”

Ji Anli nodded.

“At first, I thought the old duke was having a relapse of an old illness. But when I checked his pulse, I realized it was poisoning.

Fortunately, the person behind it was probably worried that a strong poison would kill the old duke outright so they used a mild one.

It only triggered his old illness, leading to a sudden collapse.

I gave him some medicine, so he’s okay for now.

Think about whether you and the old duke have offended anyone together.

Someone went to great lengths to create a silent disaster to kill you both.”

Lin Jing’s expression was beyond serious.

“My poison was from Lin Yu but I don’t know where his poison came from. As for the old duke… I’ve only met him a handful of times.”

If it weren’t for this mission, he wouldn’t have even met the old duke, let alone know him well.

Plus, the old duke had been searching for his son abroad for years.

In recent years, his health had been poor, and he mostly stayed in seclusion, not seeing anyone.

They had no interaction and knew little about the old duke’s situation.

Ji Anli thought for a moment.

“So what do we do now? Should we tell the old duke he was poisoned?”

Lin Jing pondered for a moment.

“I’ll find a chance to tell the old duke. Don’t reveal that you were the one who detoxified and saved him. Just say you accidentally used your healing power to save him.”

The old duke’s situation was special.

If it wasn’t this time, there would be a next time.

Only by making the old duke vigilant and cautious about the people around him could he be safe.

Ji Anli nodded.

“To completely clear the poison from his body, we need two more antidotes but I don’t have them right now. It will take time. Also, it’s best to keep this from Yiya.”

Lin Jing, “You suspect him?”

Ji Anli, “It’s not about suspicion, just being cautious doesn’t hurt.

Besides, it’s been eighteen years since they last met and Yi Ya doesn’t have much affection for the old Duke.

But if the old Duke dies then he would become the new Duke.”

One relies on the status granted by the old Duke while the other can independently take charge.

If someone deliberately uses this to tempt him, he might be swayed.

Moreover, in the book, Yi Ya is indeed the biggest beneficiary.

Lin Jing understood the underlying message in Ji Anli’s words and had Ji Anli rest in the compartment for a while as he went out to arrange everything.

Until they returned to the capital star, the crisis wasn’t over, they couldn’t let their guard down.

Ji Anli lay in the compartment, initially just waiting for the situation outside to settle.

Perhaps he hadn’t slept well in the past couple of days because he ended up falling asleep.

When he woke up, he found someone beside him.

Seeing it was Lin Jing, he closed his eyes again. His voice tinged with weariness, “How did I fall asleep? What time is it?”

Lin Jing spoke softly, not wanting to disturb the not-yet-fully-awake Ji Anli, “We’ve already entered the capital star, the crisis is over and we’ll reach the old Duke’s castle soon.

The old Duke is fine. I explained the current situation to him and from here on, it’s up to me and the old Duke.

Later, I’ll take you back to our house where Ander, Jiang Jun, and Xie Lie will protect you.”

The danger at the old Duke’s castle hadn’t been completely eliminated and he didn’t want Ji Anli to take any risks.

He couldn’t trust others but Ander and Jiang Jun were reliable. With them protecting Ji Anli, Lin Jing could be completely at ease.

Ji Anli made a sound of acknowledgment, not objecting.

Lin Jing continued, “The old Duke was conscious at the time, just unable to speak. He knows you saved him and wants to give you a token of gratitude, saying you can ask for anything.

The old Duke wants you to think it over and once this matter is resolved, he’ll do his best to repay you.”

He paused then leaned in closer, “Similarly, you saved me this time too. Think about what you want. Whatever it is, I want to give you a token of gratitude as well.”

Ji Anli, who was still a bit groggy, suddenly opened his eyes wide, “Hmm? Anything as a token of gratitude?”
